Kenya's time zone

One country, one time zone, no clock changes. Kenya keeps East Africa Time (EAT), three hours ahead of UTC, every day of the year.

East Africa Time in one paragraph

Kenya observes East Africa Time, written EAT and equal to UTC+03:00. The same time applies from Mombasa on the coast to Kisumu on Lake Victoria and up to the Ethiopian border — there are no regional time zones inside the country. Tanzania, Uganda, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea and Ethiopia keep the same offset, so travel across most of East Africa never involves changing your watch.

You can see the live figure on the Kenya clock, which also shows today's sunrise and sunset in Nairobi.

Daylight saving time in Kenya

Kenya does not observe daylight saving time and remains on UTC+3 throughout the year. Because Kenya lies close to the equator, the length of daylight varies much less across the year than it does in countries farther north or south.

The practical consequence is convenient: once you know the difference between your time zone and Kenya today, that difference only changes if your own country moves its clocks.

Kenya compared with other countries

The table shows the difference during the other country's standard time, and during its daylight saving period where one exists.

Planning calls and meetings

Many offices in Kenya operate roughly between 08:00 and 17:00 on weekdays, although opening hours vary by organisation and sector. That overlaps comfortably with the whole European working day, with the afternoon in India and the Gulf, and with the early morning in the eastern United States — a 09:00 New York call is 16:00 or 17:00 in Nairobi, which is still inside the working day. Australia is the awkward one: Sydney's afternoon is Kenya's early morning.

History of the offset

Kenya has not always been neatly on the hour. Local mean time gave way to UTC+02:30 in 1908; the territory moved to UTC+03:00 in 1928, back to UTC+02:30 in 1930, to UTC+02:45 in 1937, and finally to UTC+03:00 in 1942, where it has stayed ever since. The half- and three-quarter-hour offsets were closer to Nairobi's solar time than a whole-hour zone would have been.

Swahili time is still spoken in everyday life: saa moja, "hour one", is 07:00, because the count begins at sunrise. Timetables, businesses and official notices use the standard 24-hour clock, but it is worth knowing if someone arranges to meet you at "saa nne" (10:00).
